line Corsica Walking Holiday - Walk The Mediterranean Island

Corsica belongs to France and one of the country's famous patriarchs took his first breath on this Mediterranean island: Napoleon Bonaparte.

Being just so near to Italy as Corsica is, you straight away get the feeling that it's not all French, but somewhat more a mixture of French/Italian culture, language, food & lifestyle.

Most walking holidays will take you from the mountains, in the heart of the French island, down to Ajaccio by the coast.

Arriving to the island by ship seems to be the suitable way, & you can begin a voyage from Livorno and Genoa in Italy or from Marseilles, Nice or Toulon in France.

Approaching the historic port of Bastia, facing east towards Italy, the baroque architecture oozes history going back to 1378. Bastia means "fortified site" and that is what Bastia was centuries ago - a fortified site.

Certainly you can choose to fly into Bastia Poretta airport - twenty km south from the town center. Flights come from mainland France, Germany, England, Morocco, Sweden, Luxembourg and Italy.

Trains from Bastia can carry you to Ajaccio, Calvi or Ponte Leccia and you will find buses & coaches to take you in all directions.

Most walking holidays in Corsica starts, as already stated, from the midsection of the retreat, & if you would like to experience the pace of life in a rural village: - Bocognano, at a height of 650m, is the absolute place to do so. The locals get together for a game of petang & they still gather wild herbs for their home cuisine. A number of walking Corsican holidays begin here, and the surroundings are beautiful! It is connected to Bastia by train.

The native born Corsicans call Corsica 'Ile de Beaute' - the beautiful island. And so it is! Corsica is still untouched by mass-tourism & offers a breathtakingly diverse scenery. You will discover that the Corsican people are devoted to keep their special culture alive.
