12 Things You Need When Working From Home

Here is my list of twelve things you really (really) need when working from home….

These are what I would consider my “essentials”, things that I (at least) need to have in place whether you are working from home  for somebody else or running your own business…..

Of course your list may be different (possibly driven by whatever it is you do), and maybe a set of headphones is your number 1 working from home accessory (if you were in customer service), or maybe some sort of specialist software if you are into that sort of thing…

Anyway, here is my Top 12 .. I bet yours is different!

 

  • A reliable internet connection, preferably wireless … to avoid those frustrating moments when you are just not connected
  • A good quality cost effective printer/scanner/photocopier … there’s nothing more frustrating than a dodgy printer which churns through the ink
  • A good quality fax… ditto
  • A space to work in ….. just to get away from the rest of the family
  • A desk of some sort – ideally dedicated for your work at home
  • A comfortable office chair …. to avoid back pains and the Health and Safety people
  • A reliable laptop or PC running an effective antivirus software … explains itself
  • Discipline to avoid distractions …. daytime TV and Facebook anyone!
  • The ability to switch off at the  end of the day …. set your boundaries and keep to them yourself
  • If you need it a reliable conference call provider .. can be  invaluable if you need any sort of 3 way communication or file sharing
  • The “buy in”  of your  family to the concept of when you are working.. well, you are working….
  • A copious supply of tea or coffee…..

And that’s it really, you can add the bells and whistles such as stationary, filing cabinets etc etc but as long as you have space, equipment and discipline then you will find that working from home may just work for you
